Is that a Big Gun in your Pocket, Soldier?

When you are as old as we are, you have the nasty habit of remembering things. (Except of course when you can't remember things - like where you put your car keys.)

The opposition to gays in the military can be summed up in one word: Tailhook.

Way back in 1991 – nearly twenty years ago now (two centuries in Gen Y speak) - the general public was treated to the scandal that was Tailhook. That such things had been going on for years surprised no one. That such things went on with the tacit acquiescence of The Big Brass surprised no one. At least no one who had a clue about How Things REALLY Work in the armed forces.

It became crystal clear to us that the reason the Fussy Futsus in charge of the BIG gun-toting branch of the US Government were so opposed to gays in the military was that they were convinced that gay men would treat them they way they treat women! (Lesbians, btw, don't count in this equation because in the military's tiny little testosterone poisoned mind all a Lesbian really needs to "straighten her out" is a Real Man.)

And now, we gather, the times they are a-changin'. Hmmm... Well, with a general officer in Afganistan making pregnancy a court-martial offence (he backed down eventually) - we do wander how MUCH times are a-changin'.

We are one of those Religious Leaders who actually DEPLORES the whole idea of a military, but even so, if there must be one let it be made up of ALL CITIZENS and not just heterosexual supremacists with rap sheets. . .
