We dare say heaps of Muslims are thrilled to know that a certain 12 year old Saudi girl from Buraidah has given up her clearly misguided wish to divorce her 80 year old husband. "I agree to the marriage," she is reported to have said. "I have no objection. This is in filial respect to my father and obedience to his wish."
It has been reported that the girl's father, who is separated from her mother, arranged her marriage to the 80-year-old last September in exchange for a dowry payment of 85,000 riyals (22,667 dollars).
The mother, it seems, petitioned the court to annul the marriage and charged that the girl had been raped. She has since withdrawn that petition.
We were interested to learn in the course of reading about this case that the Prophet Mohammed had a 9 year old bride - they had been betrothed when she was six or seven. We were also interested to learn that the Prophet had, depending on the historical sources cited, either eleven or thirteen wives. Brigham Young, our esteemed ancestor, had fifty-five wives. We expect that can be put down to everything being bigger and better in America than anywhere else ever. (And also slightly older apparently. Of great-great-great-grandpappy's 55 wives, only seven were age 18 or younger, the youngest being fifteen, three were 16, one 17 and two eighteen.)
